Summer heat can be intense, especially for domestic workers who spend time outdoors or in non-air-conditioned spaces.
🧠 Advocate for Yourself
Communicate with your employer about safe working conditions.
Ask for breaks, shade, and water access—these are basic rights, not luxuries.
Here are some practical and protective tips to stay safe and cool:
☀️ Hydration is Key
Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. Aim for a glass every 15–20 minutes.
Avoid caffeine and sugary drinks—they can dehydrate you.
Add a pinch of salt or electrolyte powder if you're sweating heavily.
👒 Dress Smart
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
A wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses can help shield you from the sun.
Use breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
🧊 Take Cooling Breaks
Rest in shaded or air-conditioned areas when possible.
Use a cool, damp cloth on your neck or wrists to lower body temperature.
Schedule the most strenuous tasks for early morning or late afternoon.
🧴 Protect Your Skin
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every 2 hours.
Reapply after sweating or washing.
🚨 Know the Warning Signs
Be alert for symptoms of heat exhaustion:
Dizziness, nausea, headache, or muscle cramps
Pale or clammy skin
Fatigue or confusion
If symptoms appear, stop working, move to a cool place, and hydrate. If they worsen, seek medical help immediately.
