The Secret Life of Candidates: Why Free Time Isn’t Off the Record

When someone asks “What do you like to do in your spare time?” in an interview, they’re not just making small talk—they’re looking to understand more about your personality, values, work-life balance, and whether you’ll mesh well with their team or household environment.

✅ Examples of Strong Answers

1. “I enjoy staying active—whether it’s going for a walk, doing yoga, or taking a weekend hike. It helps me stay energized and clear-minded.”

(Shows balance, discipline, and self-care.)

2. “I like to read and am always trying to learn something new—whether it’s related to child development, organization techniques, or just a good novel to unwind.”

(Demonstrates curiosity and a growth mindset.)

3. “In my free time, I enjoy cooking and trying new recipes. I find it relaxing, and it also helps in planning nutritious meals when I’m supporting a household or family.”

(Practical and relevant to many roles.)

4. “I spend time with my family and close friends, and I believe nurturing those relationships helps keep me grounded and positive.”

(Communicates emotional stability and maturity.)

5. “Volunteering when I can is something I care about. Whether it’s helping at a community event or mentoring, I like to stay connected to giving back.”

(Shows responsibility, integrity, and community spirit.)

❌ What to Avoid

Overly personal or controversial topics (e.g., politics, nightlife, religion).

Anything that suggests you’d be frequently unavailable, tired, or distracted.

Trying to sound “perfect” or robotic—authenticity matters.
